5-Layer Spicy Oven Ready Lasagna Recipe combines turkey sausage, lean ground beef, three cheeses & fresh herbs in a signature dish that's a family favorite by Becky's Best Bites

5-Layer Spicy Oven Ready Lasagna Recipe combines turkey sausage, lean ground beef, three cheeses & fresh herbs in a signature dish that’s a family favorite. Well, at least one of my family’s favorites. A healthier version of a typical lasagna but retaining all of those classic lasagna flavors. I have been making this recipe for years, tweaking if along the way, and I think I have finally perfected it enough to share with all of you.

My dad had been “suggesting” for a couple of weeks that I make my lasagna. He would say things like, “It sure has been a while since we have had some of your awesome lasagna.” To be honest, I kept putting it off because lasagna is work. It isn’t one of those weeknight meals for me and our weekends have been full of game-day spreads and 1-year-old birthday parties.

Finally last weekend, I had the time and the weather had cooled off slightly so I decided it was time for my lasagna. Now, the next problem…it had been so long since I had made it and I hadn’t put it on the blog so I could refer back to that…I really didn’t remember how I had made it. I searched around Pinterest and the internet looking for the recipe that I used to base my lasagna, but couldn’t seem to find it. Then I remembered that I used no-boil lasagna noodles. Taking out the extra step of boiling the noodles before assembling the lasagna makes the process a little easier, so I am totally for that! I went to Barilla’s website since they have the no-boil noodles that I have used and voila I found this recipe and it is very similar to what I have done in the past. I just had to add some meat for my family…they are definitely meat eaters.

These are the ingredients that you will need for 5-Layer Spicy Oven Ready Lasagna Recipe. I know it looks like a lot, but trust me it is worth it!! This lasagna received rave reviews by my family! I had to promise to not let it be so long before I make it again. And I will because I really need to retake the pictures for the lasagna. They really don’t do it justice. I was trying to beat the sun going down to grab pictures, but I wasn’t successful. I had to take pictures inside under the harsh lights in the kitchen. Sorry y’all!

5-Layer-Spicy-Oven-Ready-Lasagna is totally worth the effort!

Serves: 8
Ingredients
  • 2 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 large sweet onion, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced or pressed
  • 2 medium jalapeños, ribs and seeds removed according to your heat preference & chopped. (optional)
  • 1 lb. 93% lean ground beef
  • 1 lb. hot, ground turkey sausage (sub mild if you don't like spicy)
  • ¼ cup dry red wine (optional)
  • 2 jars Tomato & Basil Marinara Sauce (or your choice of marinara sauce)
  • 1 tbsp. fresh basil, chopped (sub 1 tsp. dry)
  • 1 tbsp. fresh oregano, chopped (sub 1 tsp. dry)
  • Sea Salt & Fresh Ground Pepper
  • 1 box Oven-Ready Lasagna noodles
  • 1 (32 oz.) container part-skim ricotta cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 4 cups reduced fat italian blend shredded cheese (or just mozzarella)
  • ½ cup grated parmesan cheese
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  2. In a large skillet heat olive oil and add onion, garlic & jalapenos. Saute until onion is translucent (approximately 3-4 minutes).
  3. Add ground beef and turkey sausage. Brown until cooked through, breaking up the meat as it cooks.
  4. Deglaze meat mixture with red wine and reduce well.
  5. Add marinara sauce and fresh herbs and stir to combine. Turn off heat.
  6. Spray a 9 x 13 inch baking dish with non-stick cooking spray.
  7. For the bottom layer pour one cup of meat sauce and spread evenly.
  8. Top with 3 sheets of oven-ready lasagna. The sheets will expand while baking to the ends of the dish.
  9. In a small mixing bowl, whisk together ricotta cheese and egg. Mix well.
  10. Pour 1 cup of meat sauce on the oven-ready lasagna and then top with about ¼ of the ricotta mixture and ¼ of the italian cheese.
  11. Continue for 3 more layers.
  12. For the final layer top with 3 sheets of oven-ready lasagna, pour remaining meat sauce and top with an even layer of parmesan cheese.
  13. Cover with foil and place in the pre-heated oven, bake for 25-35 minutes (until bubbly).
  14. Once baked remove foil and bake additional 5 minutes to brown the cheese. Let rest 15 minutes before cutting.

I believe it’s been scientifically proven, there’s no such thing as a bad lasagna. Or a bad pizza.
