Have you ever thought about making your own organic baby food? In this post, I am going to teach you how to make homemade plum baby food. It is quick, easy and much healthier and cheaper than buying the prepackaged junk at the grocery store. You can make a large batch once, freeze in one ounce portions, and your baby will eat for months! How cool is that?

As a reminder (and for those of you that are new), I am not making baby food for my baby….I don’t have one. I am making it for my nephew, Z. You should check out how stickin’ cute this little man is in this post. I made a promise to my sister when she was pregnant that I would make all of his baby food. I wanted it to be my contribution and it tapped my favorite skill, cooking, so it was a winner! I was able to make the majority of his baby food even with them living three hours away! Yay!!
In my post on homemade spinach baby food, I detail my setup process and the products that I have found to be the most helpful when making baby food. The plums were a little bit different from some of the other fruits and veggies that I have turned into baby food. I followed Kristina’s method over at Thirty Something pretty closely. You will need to peel the plums, cut them into chunks and take out the hard pit or seed in the middle. It involves a little more effort but it’s worth it 🙂 As it turned out, plums were one of Z’s favorites, so I made them quite a bit.
Just a little bit of a head’s up here…each plum doesn’t make a whole lot of baby food. You might get an ounce of baby food out of one plum, so plan accordingly if you are going to make a large batch….You will need to buy LOTS of plums 🙂
Here is the instructions on how to make homemade plum baby food:
- Organic and ripe plums
- Wash the fruit
- Carve an "X" in the bottom of each fruit (this will help with peeling later).
- Prepare a large bowl with ice water and set aside.
- Put about an inch or so of water in your large stock pot. Add a steamer basket to the pot, making sure that there is no water visible in the basket.
- Bring the water to a boil over high heat.
- Once the water is rapidly boiling, fill the steamer basket with the plums and cover the pot.
- Steam the plums until they are soft and can easily be pierced with a fork (just a couple of minutes depending on how ripe the plums were).
- Remove the plums and submerge in ice water.
- Peel the plums, cut into chunks and discard the seed or pit in the center and transfer to the food processor.
- Process the plums until it creates a puree. (You shouldn't need any additional water because of the high water content of the plums.)
- Use a spoon to fill up the ice-cube trays with the plum puree.
- Place trays of baby food in the freezer and freeze until solid, usually over night or up to 24 hours.
- Once frozen, pop the cubes of plum baby food out of the trays and place into either vacuum sealer pouches or freezer storage bags.
- Either vacuum seal the pouches or try to squeeze out as much air as possible out the freezer storage bags.
- Place back in the freezer until needed.
- Thaw as needed. Each cube is 1 ounce of baby food.
